Charity Fair for the 7th and 8th Grade: Time for Fun, Time for Love

Ah, it’s that time of year again. Time for scares, horror, and charity! This day marked, arguably, the most important event of the semester for 7th and 8th graders alike: the charity fair. This is a time where everybody from both grades gathers together to buy and sell goods, raise money and awareness, and most of all to have fun.

Tables lined the road to the cafeteria, where the 1st and 2nd floors were completely occupied by stands selling all kinds of food, toys, and services. You could find mouthwatering South Korean Fried Chicken, famous Monchouchou fruit cup cakes , wine preserved crabs, self-made milk tea and juice, and a ringtoss game as well as various stylish stationaries. Students burst out the door of the New Art Building, lining up to exchange their money for tokens, where they then immediately filled the area. Within minutes, the venue became a wonderland filled with students, teachers, friends, and family sharing their happiness while donating their love.

The charity fair this year was a little different from previous ones. The students implement more business strategies into their stalls, and the students were far more independent for their teachers and parents than usual. We saw people making advertisements on social media, such as WeChat, or through material ads such as flyers. Another was that reservations were being made from business to business. This let sales flow in a orderly fashion, rather than just masses of people crowded around one table.

Days prior to the actual event, members of the associated student body (better known as the ASB) gathered together to plan out the event. A major part of this was the cream pie challenge, an event that has been hosted by the ASB for many years. “We discussed how we were going to execute this whole process, like how to pie teachers, and whether we should host an auction or do a lottery” said ASB member Lilian Fan, who was involved in the planning.

The cream pie challenge this year was very successful. ASB members along with teachers were subject to being hit in the face with pies made from shaving cream or, if you were lucky enough, whipped cream. “I think that it’s really fun to be hit in the face with a plate full of cream, but at the same time knowing that you are doing this for charity,” participant John Wang recalled. Most contestants were chosen through lottery, with the exception being Mr. Ni. An auction was held, and the winner paid 400 RMB to splatter pie all over his face. All the participating teachers in the pie challenge enjoyed every bit of it, for every bit of money raised goes to a person in need. The teachers all agreed that every year, this event evolves to become a better version of itself, always bringing more and more joy to the world. Director Ni even gave his opinion, stating that at first, the fair was small, raking in a few thousand, and consisting of small businesses. The effort by the ASB, and the independence of the students continues to grow each year, with less and less reliance on parents.

The charity fair was fun, exciting, and lively. Brandon Wu wrapped it off nicely, stating that “when you realize that all of these food, goods, etc. are being sold for charity, it feels awesome to know.”
