8th Graders Received Awards at National High School Debate League of China

On the 21st and 22nd of this month, many students from our school participated in the National High Debate League of China. It was a two day competition with nearly 70 Middle School participants and over 200 High School participants from multiple International Schools or bilingual schools. Most of the participants were from Shanghai, while the others had come from various cities and provinces across China.

This competition was special since it was the first for many of us. Competing along with many talented and hardworking students was one of the most amazing things. On the first day, we competed randomly with other teams in the competition. After lunch came the power matches. Debating against students who are on a par with you is difficult. When we were waiting for the results of which teams proceeded to the elimination rounds that night, we all felt butterflies swarming in our stomachs. The next day was the most challenging. Only four teams survived the first round of the day. Both of the SHSID teams unfortunately were knocked out here. In the end, a SAS team and a WFLA team competed in the finals. Awards were given out and the exciting debate competition was over. In this competition, Emma and Nicole form Grade 7 ranked in the Top 8 debaters while Eileen, Anita and Cathy ranked in the Top 4.

It was an extremely tiring competition, but all the teams were clearly well prepared. Most participants had probably worked on their constructive speeches for a few weeks. It was a great event, and hopefully more students will join next year.
