Grade 11: Job Shadow Day

On October 13th ’s Job Shadow Day, two students from eleventh grade went to the Shanghai Institute of Measuring and Drawing to experience one day of internship. In the morning, the two students were separated and sent on two different missions. One went to a construction site and learned the process of measuring the height of a structure. The workers had to verify that the building is within the height approved by the government.

The other student went to Dezhou Road in Jiading District to accompany a group of staff to measure 3 kilometers of levelling, which is one part of a large project that maps the basis of the construction of a railway. In addition to answering any questions the students might have, the staff cordially explained and demonstrated the principles by which the measuring instruments work.

After lunch, a teacher in the Institute gave the two students a tour and described the individual tasks done by the four different departments. The students learned how the institute gathers information and applies the data and diagrams gathered onto the surveillance of illegal construction and the analysis of the natural environment.

Through this visit, the students learned how the employees of the Shanghai Institute of Measuring and Drawing work on an average day. They were also lucky enough to learn some things about surveying and measuring that is not taught in classrooms!
