The Chemistry Group: Nature of Science and Chemistry Teaching

Recently, the Chemistry group organized a group work project on the topic of the “Nature of Science and Chemistry Teaching”.

First of all, the teachers read the IB Chemistry syllabus together and discussed IB level questions in order to understand the spirit of IB teaching. By combining the concept of ‘the nature of science’ with IB learning, SHSID’s students should be able to understand the nature of science and master high level scientific skills and technology.

In the second part, the teachers separated themselves into groups to discuss the following certain topics. Here are those topics’ descriptions:

(1) The scientific method includes much more than just concepts and steps. Whether students are doing a science project, a classroom science activity, independent research, or any other hands-on science inquiry, the scientific method will help them to practice their skills and work through observations and data to answer the question as well as possible.

(2) In real teaching and learning of chemistry, students always find out that there are exceptions to the rules, which are difficult to memorize. As a result, it is important for students to understand the real relation between theoretical models and real facts, to understand and accept that there could be some exceptions to some theories. Thus students are able to explain properties of matter and observations by applying simulated models.

(3) Concerning the nature of science, there are some discussions and examples relating to philosophy and ethics. In Chemistry class, how can teachers link science topics to moral concerns, issues, and values?

(4) Building good connections with others through team work, cooperating well with team members, and presenting one’s work fully are all necessary abilities and skills for High School students. How can teachers combine such practice and training with the Chemistry teaching process?
