Grade 12: Healthy Lecture

On October 11th, Dr. Song presented a lecture called “To Make Yourself More Beautiful and More Handsome” to the 11th and 12th graders of SHSID. The lecture aimed to spread holistic health awareness to young students.

During the session, Dr. Song lectured about the relationship between the five facial organs and the five internal organs in the human body, and how our inner self influences our outer appearance.

“Our appearances were given to us by our parents before 12 years old. However, we are able to change our appearances through taking care of ourselves after 12 years old,” said the doctor. For instance, if a person always stays up late, his liver will not be able to have a thorough rest. As a result, that person’s eyes will be affected by his overworked liver, thus showing signs of age and unnatural weariness at young age.

Dr. Song emphasized that although high school students have very busy schedules, they should always try to get enough sleep and eat quality food. People should sleep before 11pm and try to drink less cold drinks and ‘out-of-season’ food. Dr. Song gave eating watermelon during winter as an example of eating ‘out-of-season’ fruit. According to beliefs from Chinese traditional medicine, watermelons are ‘cold-natured’ and therefore not suitable to eat during winter. Instead, the watermelon’s ‘strength’ in ‘heat-clearing’ is taken advantage of during summer. Through this lecture, Dr. Song explained how to take care of oneself and encouraged the students to improve their health through good everyday habits.
