Middle School English Subject Group PD Day
Middle School English Subject Group PD Day
SHSID strives for and maintains various standards. One of the standards that SHSID values is having high quality teachers who ensure our learners can achieve their full potential. October 13th in the Middle School was a professional development day where all subject teachers had the chance to share ideas and insights.
In the English department, teachers came together to discuss curriculum alignment in Grades 5 to 8. Discussing curriculum alignment allows teachers to focus on filling gaps in learning from one year to the next. The teachers shared their numerous strengths as well as concepts they think their students have mastered. They also discussed areas that needed improvement and compared these weaknesses at various grade levels.
By coming together during this professional development session, the English teachers were able to identify which learning objectives would flow seamlessly throughout the years and which objectives will need to be built upon year by year. Once the teachers were able to identify all those weaker areas, they came together to discuss strategies in order to help students to master them.
Not only does curriculum alignment benefit the students, it also benefits the teachers. By understanding how curriculum content fits with student development, a more reflective approach to understanding student achievement is possible.
