8th graders field trip at Shanghai Glass Musuem

On the afternoon of October 12th, the 8th graders went to the Shanghai Glass Museum for a field trip.

The museum was separated into five different exhibitions. Four of the five exhibitions were in the main hall of the museum. These were: “What Is Glass”, ”Development of Technology and Craftsmanship", "From Daily Life to Cutting Edge Technology", and "Proof of Artistic Creativity". In the first unit, students were introduced to the characteristics of glass and the origin of glass-making. In ”Development of Technology and Craftsmanship”, the museum used “time” to explain the distinct glass made in different regions of the world (such as ancient Egypt and the ancient Chinese dynasties). In the third exhibition hall, there was a wall consisting of different questions about type of the glass used in the daily life, which students could look at by opening small “windows” on the wall. The fourth unit, which was mainly the works of famous artists, included Chekhov’s famous piece of advice: “Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.”

After visiting the four exhibitions in the main hall, the students watched a show of the glass-making process outside the main hall. On the stage, the craftsman extracted raw material from their sweltering furnace and demonstrated tto he students how to preform the softening, blowing, grinding, and pressing of glass. The narrator near the stage introduced the principle for the production of glass and the different steps (including some safety tips) involved in making glass. Finally, a shining glass dolphin was created for the students in less than 20 minutes.

Before the trip ended, every student got a chance to decorate their own glass cups with paint in the DIY section of the museum.

It was definitely a memorable visit! The students got to know exactly what lies behind different kinds of glass.
