Grade 8 Students Receive Volunteer Training at Shanghai Long Museum

On September 17th, eighteen students from the SHSID’s 8th Grade were invited to Shanghai’s Long Museum, to undergo volunteer guide training.

In the morning, They first walked around the museum, briefly learning the art works that they would introduce to visitors. The exhibition they mainly focused on was “Still Moving” by Antony Gormley. After that, a professional tour guide gave a talk and demonstration on presenting artworks. He also talked about the history of the museum and the advertisement of other ongoing exhibitions there. Long Museum is a privately-owned museum founded by Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei. There are currently three Long museums: two in Shanghai, and one in Chongqing. They are still expanding in scale.

After lunch, each student received a booklet on Antony Gormley and his works, along with a template on how to present his work. Antony Gormley specializes in sculpture, in fact, the major work he is presenting in this exhibition is a group of 60 sculptures made of steel, called “Critical Mass II”. The students took turns to carry out the tour, interpreting of the sculptures and paintings. They were told to memorize everything on the booklet, which they considered to be the hardest part of this entire experience.

Overall, everyone had a great time and learned a lot from this Service Learning program. The students are all looking forward to the day when their hard work pays off!
