ISS 2017 Future Power
ISS 2017 Future Power
During lunchtime on September 14th, Allen Xie, Sangyoon Kwon, and Hongyuan Yan from class 12(1) along with Shuaizi Diao from local division’s Senior High Class 7 introduced a summer school– the International Science School (ISS) organized by the Physics department of the University of Sydney. Jumping directly on topic, the lecturers talked about the essence of ISS, which is to develop the students’ passion for the sciences. A schedule filled with lectures and activities was tailored to ignite that inner interest and potential of a science students over the course of two weeks.
One of our students said: “Every morning and afternoon there would be a lecture; the professors would be from renowned schools and colleges across Australia. The lecture topics would sometimes be deep and insightful, but the professor would always use concise and easy language to explain it thoroughly. Sometimes, they would combine it with another related field, adding variety to the taught knowledge while also simplifying complicated concepts for participating students.”
Other than lectures, the rest of ISS’s schedule was packed with activities of all kinds. From the displayed pictures, our students could see that ISS is a diverse community where the top teenagers from varying nationalities come together to share ideas fervently, enjoy games, and to utilize exceptional equipment to carry out multiple scientific experiments. ISS is showcased as a place where students can enhance their love for science through effort. It allows for students to learn and expand their horizons in a resourceful environment under limited time.
The lowerclassmen present at the lecture all watched and listened with awe in their eyes. Some persisted with questions after hearing about an experiment they’re personally interested in, some took careful notes on ISS’s application process, and others even expressed their desire to apply to ISS next year. The lecture radiated with jubilation.
