Grade 3: Look up a word in a dictionary

On Sept 18th in Chinese show and tell class, Grade 3 Native level Chinese classes carried out a competition about looking up words in a dictionary. All the kids were well involved in this competition. They worked together in groups and overcame the challenging questions step by step.

This competition was made up of 3 parts. For the first part all the students needed to find the pronunciations of many unusual characters. The second part tested how they grasp the radicals and strokes of Chinese characters. In the third part, students are required to circle the most suitable meaning for each character when they are part of a specific word.

When the competition started, all the kids quickly figured out what they should do. Some of them looked up words, some wrote on the paper, some thought about the meaning of the given words. The competition was so intense that everyone was so into it and wanted to finish the paper on time and to a high standard.

When the competition ended, the teachers announced the winning groups. This competition not only checked their ability for looking up words in a dictionary but also emphasized their group work ability. A dictionary is a silent teacher who plays quite an important role when they work on their homework independently or read books by themselves. We hope that all the students can apply this ability in their study and life, cultivating the good habit of looking up words in a dictionary rather than asking and studying independently.
