Grades 5-6: Youth Development Class

Youth Development started strong in Grades 5 & 6 last week. After a brief introduction to the range of topics they would cover this year, they dove right into their first major theme: self-regulation and self-improvement. At the top of the lesson, students spent time practicing self-reflection by considering their personal strengths and weaknesses. Then, the students began exploring growth mindset versus fixed mindset. A fixed mindset believes that qualities, like intelligence, ability, talents, are “fixed” and that they cannot be improved. Growth mindset is the opposite. It expresses the belief that an individual can grow and develop almost any skill through adequate and targeted effort and practice.

This lesson is the first in a three part series on self-regulation and self-improvement. It laid the foundational idea for students, that with proper planning and action, anyone can improve. Over the next month, students will continue on this journey to set goals, develop plans, and learn usable strategies for self-improvement— skills that will help empower them as lifelong independent learners.
