Grade 10:college counselling course(2)

On September 11th, the tenth graders of SHSID went to the Annex Auditorium of Xianmian Building to listen a college counseling course given by Ms. Zhang Nan.

First of all, Ms. Zhang Nan mentioned one of the important parts of college application— soft skills. It included interpersonal skills, flexibility, team working, responsibility, positive attitude and so on.

She then explained how to reflect soft skills on the system of American college application. Students should fill in types of activities, levels, time, descriptions and the will to continue. Because of limitation of words, Ms. Zhang Nan suggested to only write the most important experience. On the “honor” page, students were required to fill in at most five achievements. It would be better if they were the highest accomplishments in certain fields.

Next, she introduced the concept of supplementary essays. This type of essay is a platform to convey extracurricular activities and internship exercitation of students.

At last, she explained four types of extracurricular activities respectively. Ideally, students were bestowed award on their passion projects. SHSID’s family connection is a useful tool. She encouraged more students to write more journals because the more journals students write on the system, the more resources they can have for college application essays.
