My New Start at SHSID --- A Fruitful Summer Orientation
My New Start at SHSID --- A Fruitful Summer Orientation
The new school year has yet to begin for SHSID’s students, but its teachers have already been hard at work in orientation. International teachers new and old have spent the last two weeks learning about the newest teaching tools, strategies, and collaborative methodologies that they’ll be using in the coming year. In particular, teachers are excited about the new interactive whiteboard technology that will help give classroom lectures a new level of flow and clarity. Visits by the Shanghai Police Department, US Embassy, and the health insurance provider for foreign teachers help to ensure a safe, healthy, and happy stay for our foreign teachers.
Besides classroom planning and professional development, the foreign teachers also enjoyed taking some time to find their place in our community. SHSID’s veteran teachers aided the new hires in exploring our city and finding out what surprises it has in store for them. The SHSID Directors also put on an appearance to share some wisdom in the art of living and teaching in China, and help the teachers feel at ease in their new home. In particular, Principal Ma delivered a compelling perspective on the need to teach to the individual strengths and needs of every student, and to aid them in exploring their interests both inside and outside of school. This culminated in a banquet put on by SHSID at the Pullman Hotel, where the foreign teachers were welcomed to our family in earnest. Lastly, we’d like to extend a big “thank you!” to the FAO office for organizing this orientation. Their careful hand made it an experience to remember that got everybody off to a great start!
