Physics Department:"From simplicity to infinity, from inspiration to realization."
Hello, I am Leo Lee from Class 9(6), a member of the Think Outside the Box Club. I have a passion for design. I have brought two works for the club showcase held on June 6th this year. One of the works is a new model for the current school building, and the other is a beverage vending machine—on both projects I worked as the chief designer.
For SHSID students, the Zhongxing Building is a familiar place containing many of our memories. However, there are problems such as narrow and disconnected hallways, crowded lunch rooms, as well as difficulties relating to hosting club fairs. Believing that the tiresome school life needed to be changed, I wrote a proposal for flipping the school building. I, together with my teammates Frank Lin, Pauline Wo, and Reina Zhang created a plan for this project. The new building was themed round nature, with a cyclical structure and a garden in the center. Bright classrooms and partitions would improve the efficiency of teaching, while a central air conditioning system consisting of temperature, humidity, and air quality modules. A water purifying system, with the help of solar panels effectively decrease the carbon emission. The school life will also become more comfortable with a hallway linking stairs and exits on a straight line, retractable table sets, elevators, automated people movers, and light sensitive road lamps. In a few years, this place holding endless memories will appear to us again in completely new way.
DIY stands for 'Do It Yourself'. But what does that mean? To me, it means the process of turning your inspiration into creative innovations.I am currently working on a DIY build with my friend Chingyuan Mei, using materials including a computer PSU (Power Supply Unit), an air pump, a coin acceptor, a CPU cooler, a Peltier cooling chip, and a infrared distance sensor.Recently Chingyuan showed me an electrical drinking machine he made. Unlike the models that have come before, the water outlet on his drinking machine is installed at a position higher than the water container, so that the water is being pumped out using an air pump. This innovation sparked my imagination, which led to the prototype for our newest invention. Based on the existing model, I added various electrical devices to the machine and connected their electrical inputs and outputs to an Arduino chip. This integration created an automatic beverage vending machine, consisting of air cooling, liquid dispensing, and information processing modules, with functions including temperature control, coin display, and liquid level detect. After completion, our beverage vending machine will hopefully come into service in the future club fairs hosted by the school's WE Club, which I think will be a milestone for SHSID's smart club fairs.
