Grades 9-10: History Day

On June 7th, all the 9th and 10th graders gathered in the school auditorium to attend the Historical Documentary and Film Project Award Ceremony. At the beginning of this semester, the 9th and 10th graders were assigned the grade-level documentary and narrative film projects respectively. The 9th graders were required to make a 5-minute documentary in groups of 4-6. Each group member was responsible for finding and reading a variety of sources that had to be included in their bibliography. The 10th graders were asked to do historical research, conduct interviews, and shoot and edit video all by themselves with 6-10 students in each group. After 2-3 months of efforts, it’s now time for them to celebrate their achievements.

There were 10 groups of students who were awarded the group prizes including Best Overall Documentary/Film, Best Technical Use and Multi-Media, Best Editing and Presentation, Best Use of Historical Sources and References, Most Informative, Best Acting, Best Costume and Dress and Best Scenes and Design. All the winning works were screened during the ceremony and rewarded with long and warm applause. We can see the students’ skills in organizing various source materials and writing scripts through the pictures, clips, interviews, subtitles used in their documentaries. We can also learn how the historical events are seen through the students’ eyes from the acting and dialogues. All of this makes us look forward to the next History Day.
