Middle School: Service Learning Reflection Presentation

The purpose of school is not solely for providing students with knowledge and academic proficiency, but also to socialize them and build their will to serve the community. Eighth grade is the transition stage between the middle and high school section, where students begin to grow as responsible, independent young adults. On the eighth of June, 2017, the eighth graders presented their reflection on their year-round effort in various service learning groups.

As the gigantic auditorium began to be fill up with numerous guests and students, it was time for the school’s group leaders to elaborate on their hard work with hearts full of pride and confidence. Various meaningful groups were present on stage: from off-campus representative from Stepping Stones and the Indigo Workshop to on-campus teams like ‘Newsletter’ and ‘Simply Bakery’. With an organized PowerPoint to enhance their presentations, each leader began their reflection by giving a quick introduction of their service learning groups. Then, they explained their goals, needs, and the community, which were the three crucial thematic elements of their reflection. Last but not least, they also stated several difficulties they have encountered or the influence they had brought to their communities. Gentle smiles were blooming on the faces of the audience as they watched the videos of volunteers trying their best to aid these who were in need of help. The pictures shown on the presentation proved the exceptional quality of SHSID students’ service. The reflection was concluded with a big warm round of applause.

At last the donation ceremony and award ceremony brought the reflection to a perfect close. Mr. Liu Lian, the Middle School and Primary School Principal, and Mr. Ni Minxue, the director of Middle School, appeared onstage to give donations to the two charity organizations and expressed their appreciation for the support of these organizations. Prizes were also bestowed to these off-campus service learning groups.

The school year now has less than two weeks left, as the students of eighth grade graduate from middle school and prepare for another ambitious journey into high school life. The service learning reflection held on this edge of the semester must have been a momentous, significant first step into the upcoming new world.
