Grade 11: “Under the same sky” Children’s Day celebration @ Xingyu Children’s Health Hospital

On June 1st, students of SHSID’s volunteer groups came to the Xingyu Children’s Health Hospital for the “Under the Same Sky” Children’s Day celebration there. Weeks before, our volunteers began to prepare for their participation in the Children’s day Celebration. On Children’s day, our volunteers arrived at Xingyu early in the morning. Some of them helped to prepare the stage and setup work for the celebration, and some of them used the last minutes before the performance to rehearsal one more time. Emily Teng from Grade 11 was the host, and she was busy preparing her script. At 9:30 the celebration began. High school director Ms Liu Qin was invited to the stage to receive the Certificate of Volunteer Work from the hospital with other companies and institutions. After the award, the performances started. Some of our students put in performances that delighted the children, even prompting them to join in. The students have said that “the joy of the children was palpable” through their wordless excitement. They saw that the patients were just like normal children and truly appreciated the opportunity to be able to serve them in this event. This is the meaning of the volunteer work in Xingyu. Every week, our students went to Xingyu, making posters for the children, doing handcraft for the children, or cutting grass and plant seeds for the children. All these are very tiny things that we can do, but we believe that as long as we persevere, we will continuously bring happiness and joy to the children in Xingyu.
