Foreign Teacher Professional Development

For Professional Development, SHSID Foreign Teachers were able to attend an extremely informative lecture from former SHSID teacher, Michael Corayer. Michael taught high school students at SHSID and was back for a visit before the break for Dragon Festival. He was kind enough to talk to current foreign teachers about his studies on memory and how this could play a role in our teaching styles. The lecture topic was “Teaching How to Learn: Effective Study Techniques.”

Throughout the lecture Michael mapped out how memory works, and how effective it is to use our long-term memory rather than our short-term and working memory. His research cited that reducing the load on working memory allows students to focus on essential steps, rather than the recall of information. He also discussed his research on strategies for review, focusing on when and how to go about reviewing information. He spoke of how the work of Nicholas Cepede shows us that the most effective time for students to review is when they are nearly forgetting the information that was presented to them. He also cited research from Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke that shows that having students test themselves after studying is the most effective form of retrieval practice. Foreign teachers are grateful to Michael for sharing his research with us and plan to use this information to continue to help students become well-informed, independent learners.
