Puxi Grade 4: Shapes in Buildings

Geometry is the branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relationships of lines, angles, curves, and shapes. The Grade Four students studying this chapter of their textbooks started work on a new project about famous buildings.

Buildings around the world come in many different shapes and sizes. This project required student two forms groups of two or three, and find at least 2 different solid shapes used for some famous buildings. These buildings could be the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, the Oriental Pearl Tower, etc. Students could also take pictures by themselves or download the pictures online. After they found these shape-pictures, the students were asked to draw the shapes of the buildings and analyze each shape to complete the chart based on their research. For example, they needed to write down the number of vertices, edges, faces based on the shape. All groups worked together to look for different types of buildings and make an excellent analysis of these buildings. This was a good opportunity for students to improve their scientific research abilities.
