Grade 8: Great Passion and Love: Music for Patients, Dragon Boat Festival, and Children's Day

Expressing great passion and love for Dragon Boat Festival and Children’s Day, the “Music for Patients” team organized concerts in the Shanghai Children's Medical Center for medical staff and patients on May 30th. Ms. Eva Peng, representative of SHSID 8th Grade PTSA, and Ms. Chen Yu Ting, Director of SCMC Social Work Department, attended the concert and delivered welcome speeches.

Since the team’s last visit to the Department of Hematology and Oncology Ward, and encouraged by the good result of the violin performance inside the CICU on May 12th, Kingsley Poon has been thinking that the team should try to offer a mini concert for the kids who are unable to return their homes during the holidays. As a result, two concerts in the lobby of the Outpatient Hall and in the atrium of the Hematology Oncology building were planned for the event. This is also the largest activity the team has ever organized since its establishment last semester.

For these two special concerts, the team members specially selected and prepared some new classical and modern pieces, such as violin solo ‘Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Cygnets’, piano solo ‘Summer and Schubert's Serenade’ etc. The trombone and String Quartet were joining the team first time. John Newton's ‘Amazing Grace’, Scott’s ‘The Entertainer’, Mozart's ‘Serenade’, ‘Moon River’ and ‘Castle in the Sky’ kept the atmosphere at a climax. The two specially selected pieces for the kids, a flute duet of ‘It’s a Small World’ a female vocal duet of ‘DO RE MI’ resonated with the hospitalized children, who seemed to forget their pain. Most of the children clapped their hands and were singing and dancing with the music and melody. The concerts added a rich holiday atmosphere to the Shanghai Children's Medical Center.

With support from team member Jerick’s parents, the team received toys and children’s picture books. The team members helped to distribute the gifts to those hospitalized children, wishing them a happy holiday and wishing them a speedy recovery.

Taking the basic principle of the Service Learning project to apply academic knowledge and contribute to the community, the Music for Patients team is always in action.
