The First UN4MUN China Seminar 2017 Was Hosted at SHSID

On May 28th -30th, 2017, the first UN4MUN China Seminar 2017 was held in SHSID. More than 100 high school students from different parts of China attended this conference during the Dragon Boat Festival to experience this new Model UN. Mr. Ma Feng, SHSID High School Principal, and Mr. William Yotive, the founding father of UN4MUN, attended the opening ceremony. Mr. Yotive is also the Project Manager of the United Nations Global Teaching and Learning Project within the Outreach Division of the UN Department of the Public Information.

17 students from SHSID served as the student officers and volunteers. Due to the differences between UN4MUN and other MUN conferences, many new challenges popped up during the preparation. In order to have a better understanding of the conference, these student officers started the tele-training with Mr. Yotive two months ago so as to be well trained.

Different from the UNA-USA procedure, UN4MUN was founded in 2003, and aims to simulate the real collaboration among countries in the United Nations. Hence, the most popular topics are selected and students are guided to solve the problem under the frame of collaboration.

After one-day training, and two-day conference, students gave positive feedbacks on the conference. Miss Chloe Tan, the Secretary-General of this Seminar, commented, “As a team of experienced delegates, we’ve always felt distance between the United Nations and the modelled conferences we would attend. Being unsure whether our efforts in reaching these resolution through the rigorous and competitive procedures were impactful in real life. Being a part of UN4MUN’s organising secretariat as been an honour, and especially with so meaningful a purpose, we are further committed to our mission to bring an educational, novel, and above all, enjoyable, experience to delegates. We all wish that this experience is expanded throughout China; that in the future Chinese delegates will participate actively in a type of conference that brings delegates closer with the United Nations, and thus brings us all closer to being global citizens.”
