Music at the Box Theater

On May 21st, SHSID’s inaugural Piano Invitational was held in the Box Theater of Shanghai High School. This competition was a platform for students from the international and bilingual schools of Shanghai to perform and learn from each other. We had nearly 60 contestants from 13 international and bilingual schools from all over Shanghai, such as the Shanghai American School, British International School Shanghai, Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School, Fudan International School, etc.

The competition began to the sound of graceful melodies. Throughout the day, the junior and senior high students showed off their artistic talents and solid understanding of music. Many students won prizes, such as Eliza Ruffie from Wellington College International Shanghai, Shangen Shanghao from the Shanghai Japanese School, Chun Kin Kingsley Poon from Shanghai High School International Division, Qingrong Sun from Shanghai World Foreign Language Academy, and so on.

After awarding the prizes, the leader of Shanghai High School’s Music Department, Xiangrui Chen, gave a workshop on how piano improvisation can inspire the students’ musical creativity, and invited students to try some improvisation on stage. Three students eagerly took the opportunity and received applause from the audience. Last but not least, the winner from last year’s “Shangzhong Cup” piano competition performed an improvisational piece which amazed the audience. The organizing committee announced that the improvisational part will be added to the competition next year.

This competition fully showcased the wonderful musical talents of teenagers from international and bilingual schools from all over Shanghai. We appreciate the support and participation from these schools and hope to work together to create more opportunities for art education. Overall, SHSID’s Piano Invitational was a success.
