Grade 7: Lecture on Debate
Grade 7: Lecture on Debate
Nowadays, debating is an essential skill for students. We see things related to debating every day— debate clubs, debate tournaments, debate classes, etc. A lot of students in SHSID attend debate lessens and participate in various debating competitions. However, many students might want to know how exactly does debating benefit them. On May the 18th, students from 7th grade attended a lecture about the benefits of debating in the Primary School auditorium. The lecture was given by Mr. Peter Bollig, a debating coach.
At the start of the lecture, Mr. Bollig shared his personal experience about debating to the students. Mr. Bollig first started debating in his high school’s debating club. His club lost countless times in its early days, but they did not give up and always kept training and competing. His club slowly became better and won many prizes. After that, Mr. Bollig told students the for main benefits of debating: “the four Cs”.
The first benefit is creativity. Debating allows contestants to think of their own unique ways to convince the judge and the audience. The second point is cross-culture communication. The debate topics usually involve things relating to other cultures and countries, so debating helps people to know more about other parts of the world. The third C is critical thinking. In debates there is no strict right or wrong, no black or white. One needs to interpret and build frameworks to support their opinions. The last important benefit is collaboration. People need to work with others while debating to share information and decide who is in charge of which part of the argument.
Mr. Bollig taught all students the importance and benefits of debating. Now all the students will understand and enjoy debating more in the future.
