Shanghai Swim Championships

On May 6th, 60 swimmers from SHSID attended RSS, a swim meet held once a year. This time SHSID was fully prepared. From the junior section to the senior section, SHSID’s swimmers all got amazing scores. That’s why out of all the schools in the competition, we finished in third place.

As long as there was “SHSID” on the score board, no matter whether the event was individual or a relay, the swimmers would start to cheer as loud as they can, helping their friends to get a better time.

The most hopeful moments were definitely the times when you took off your goggles and stared at the scoreboard to see if you had qualified for the next heat. But of course, the most exciting part for SHSID was the race between the coach and a swimmer. We see our coach every time we train, but we had never seen him race. When he jumped into the pool, everyone shouted. We could all see that he was working really hard to swim as fast as he could.

Every swimmer understands this feeling: having a pool right in front of you, but can’t just jump in. Just like Michael Phelps said, “I found something I love….and never gave up.” Swimmers don’t swim because it’s fun. Ask any of them and most of them hate it. But they couldn’t imagine their lives without it. It is already part of them. They live for the practice sessions, the cheers, the countless swim caps, the chlorine, the friendship bonds, and the coach you hate but appreciate later. They live for the way it feels when they beat the person next to them by a tenth of a second because they all know how much it matters. They live for the way they jump every time they hear a buzzer or the way they cheer for their friends. They live for the competition, the friends, the pain, and the practice. They live for the race, the sprint, the distance, and the team. It’s part of them because they are swimmers. Don’t fear the competition, make the competition fear you.
