World Scholar’s Cup—SHSID School Pride

Spanning across the days of April 22nd and 23rd was the World Scholar’s Cup Shanghai regional round, held within the majestic campus grounds of Shanghai United International School Wanyuan and Shanghai Pinghe School.

After two days of rigorous assessments, the students of SHSID found themselves sitting at the edge of their seats in the auditorium waiting anxiously for the award ceremony to begin. These were the people who sifted through hundreds of pages of research late at night to prepare for an hour of Scholar’s Challenge, the same people who sat across from the best speakers of academies all around the region for the Team Debate, who mustered all their brainpower for the composition of a piece of Collaborative Writing. The anticipation in the air had reached the boiling point as names rolled off the list of the PowerPoint, and the success of SHSID proved once again that hard work pays off and there is no short cut to triumph.

SHSID radiated its competence by taking home 376 medals in total for juniors and seniors combined. Of those including the domination over the top slots: with 8(5) Collin Qian, 8(7) Alex Shi, and 8(8) Aaron Zhang in first place for the Scholar’s Bowl and Scholar’s Challenge and second place overall team; 8(5) Maggie Jiang, 8(5) Michelle Ding, and 8(1) Emily Jiang in first place for overall team, second place for the Scholar’s Challenge, third place for the Team Debate, and fifth place for Collaborative Writing. Ten SHSID teams seated in the top 20, eight in the Scholar’s Challenge and Team Debate, seven for the Scholar’s Bowl, and five in Collaborative Writing. Moreover, ten students placed in the top 20 for the individual challenge, eight in individual overall, four in individual debate, and three in individual writing.

As moonlight reflected off the gilded trophies held proudly by our students, and the clink of medals sounded, the scholars of SHSID returned home with pride. They have all qualified for the global round and no doubt will leave their footprints of success on the land of Hanoi, Vietnam in the summer as well.
