Puxi Grade 2: Times Table Practice

Recently in Grade 2 Math class the students read Chapter 8 in their Maths textbooks– a chapter about multiplication. The textbook uses drawing, arrays and repeated addition to get the products of multiplication sentences. But to our pleasant surprise we found that some students already knew about times tables, and that a few of them were actually very familiar with them. So, we decided to ask the students memorize the times tables.

First, we gave extra homework every day, asking the children to memorize one row of the table. Second, before the next math class, we would spend 3 minutes practicing a song about the times table together, and also checking some students randomly. We also Wechat message the parents to tell them how important the times table is to the learning of multiplication and division in Grade 3. At the end, we had an exciting competition about multiplication with 50 questions over 3 minutes. Over 20 students get every question right and won ‘Math Times Table Star’ award!
