Students participate in the National Linguistics Olympiad

On April 15, 2017, three students of SHSID made their first attempt to participate in the annual first round of the National Linguistics Olympiad, receiving one Second-Place Award and one Third-Place Award. The National Linguistics Olympiad (NLO) is a linguistics competition centered on the logical process used in deciphering an unknown language. In this six-hour competition, students are asked to solve six questions about six different languages; this year's competion featured lesser-known languages such as Evenki, Zapotecan, and Georgian, as well as newer "languages" such as Regular Expression. Students are required to use details given in the questions to infer the language's grammatical system and the meanings of words, among other things, and are required to answer a series of questions afterwards, such as translating sentences in the language back to Chinese.
