Grade 11: Global Citizen Day - Seminar & Workshop

On April 17th, our 11th graders started time training under ‘Global Citizen Day’. As can be deduced from the name, the purpose of this event is to develop a sense of global citizenship.

What is meant by the term ‘global citizen’? It is a term for someone who takes oneself as a member of the whole world, instead of a nation of an organization; someone who is concerned about global problems and is willing to solve them by his or her own action. Prior to the two days’ journey to develop this identity, the students’ minds were prepared by a series of seminars. These seminars aimed to explain the significance of being a ‘global citizen’ and inspire the students to become one in real life. The seminars were divided into three subjects according to the interests of the students—psychology, economics, and history. In the psychology seminar, students had MBTI tests to determine their personality types, and discussed the different ways what people of each personality could do as a global citizen. In the economics seminar, the students learned about the story of Ma Yun and observed the perspective of a global citizen from him. The history seminars dealt with the difference of perspectives in which a historical event could be viewed with, and explored the solutions to current global issues such as the refugee crisis through a series of games.

The students also took part in a short team building activity, in which they could get familiar with each other and more importantly, learn more about themselves. During the activity, students were divided into groups of eight to ten. They first drew pictures on paper to explore their own strengths, interests, weaknesses, and even dreams, and shared it with their friends. Then, they chose a common element and made a visual representation of it by acting and posing. Though it was not very easy to think of one’s strengths and weaknesses, or get along well with their team members to complete the task, every team eventually did a good job in presenting themselves to their peers. Indeed, it was a worthy opening to the meaningful adventure that the students would embark on in a few hours.
