Grade 11: Global Citizen Day - First Day @ Wusi Farm
Grade 11: Global Citizen Day - First Day @ Wusi Farm
On April 17th, the 11th Graders went to Wusi Farm as one activity of Global Citizen Day. After arriving at Wusi Farm, students started off by unpacking their belongings in the dormitories assigned to them. Each room had four bunk beds, two closets, and two chairs for each dorm member. Each dorm received two thermos-bottles and water basins, as well as bed sheets for the two days of lodging. The dorm leader in each dorm took care of these supplies and distributed them among every member.
After unpacking the belongings, students assembled in the basketball court according to their classes. A few announcements were made, and a trainer was attached for each class. Then, one of the main activities of the day began. The students learned to make traditional Chinese knots and bracelets, which are used to bear wishes. The trainers taught the students how to make the knots, step by step. The process was complex; but many of the students succeeded. Braided bracelets were easier to make. By cooperating in pairs, a beautiful bracelet could be made out of two strings of different lengths.
For dinner, students made their own dumplings. Eight students sat around a table, supplied with the materials to make dumplings. There were two different flavors: meat based and vegetable based. Although not all the students had enough skills for making dumplings, the activity strengthened the team work of the students. Some students divided their jobs, and made an “assembly line” for dumplings, while others shared their methods and made the dumplings together. Since these dumplings were going to be a dinner made by the students themselves, they worked extra hard and enjoyed their dinner that little bit more than usual. It was a worthwhile experience that contained within it more than what it was.
It was such a busy day. Everyone went to bed earlier and dreamed of a more eventful day tomorrow.
