Grades 9-10: Students won several awards in NSDA
April 15th and 16th marked the beginning of the spring debate season. The topic our debaters had to grapple with was about legal barriers to immigration. After four debates in one of the more difficult tournaments in China, six debaters from SHSID qualified for the elimination rounds, and five were named Outstanding Speakers: Frank Lin, Sophia Wang, Kevin Bao, Andrew Mi, and Lelan Hu. When the tournament came to a close on Sunday evening, SHSID had garnered stellar results. Ricky Huang, Jenny Yu, and Frank Lin had earned places as Octofinalists, and Jiayi Yue, Kevin Bao, and Sophia Wang nearly closed out the Open finals. Eventually, Jiayi Yue won the championship with Kevin Bao and Sophia Wang as runners-up.
Aside from debating, Linda Li also won second place at NSDA Zhejiang’s Original Oratory, having presented a brilliant speech on LGBTQ rights.
From writing cases together from night until morning then suffering from sleep deprivation the next day, to watching fellow SHSIDers advance through the rounds together… the competitors can all agree that the NSDA Zhejiang tournament was not only a demonstration of their success, but also SHSID unity.
