Physics Department: IB physics teachers sharing thoughts on teaching NOS

IB Physics teachers recently met to share their thoughts on teaching NOS.

Nature of Science (NOS) is an integral part of the current IB Physics guide and has been required in the external assessment since May 2016. NOS involves topics such as: What is science and what is the scientific endeavor? The understanding of science. The objectivity of science. The human face of science. Scientific literacy and the public understanding of science.

IB teachers shared among each other the materials that are fit for combining Physics instruction and NOS discussion. Examples include those which are relevant to issues about the scientific method, deductive and inductive reasoning, intuition and serendipity, skepticism, Occam’s razor, fallacies such as confirmation bias and post hoc, ergo, propter hoc etc.

The IB teachers learned from each other and benefitted a lot from the discussion that was had. All the teachers are strongly aware that effectively integrating NOS into the Physics course is very useful in sharing with students our love and passion for Physics, and helping students understand that Physics is not only a body of knowledge– it is also a dynamic process of creating knowledge.
