Grades 9-10:International history bee and bowl

The International History Bee and Bowl (IHBB), a world history based competition, was once again hosted in SHSID on April 16th for the Second Shanghai Round. Again, students of SHSID dominated and won medals from all three divisions (Middle School, Junior Varsity and Varsity). More than 90 students from 20+ teams, from thirteen schools around the Greater Shanghai Area and even Suzhou attended this biannual tournament. IHBB is a great way for students from all over the world to compete. They can test their knowledge of history, geography and other humanities subjects. Normally, the speaker would read a question and individuals (in the bee) or the team (in the bowl) would buzz and try to give the correct answer. Therefore, IHBB is also a very exciting and challenging competition as students fight against the opponent and the clock at the same time.

SHSID’s JV team which consisted of ninth and tenth grade students (Maverick Cheong, Kevin Lee and Stanley Wong) was able to win the Bowl for the division and also a third place in the Bee event (Maverick Cheong). The players were well experienced, since they have participated in this event since eighth grade and have won the Asian Championships two times in a row, and also represented China at the International History Olympiad two times in a row. Even though there were defeats and careless mistakes during the competition, the team was able to fight its way through with confidence and a good team spirit. Another JV team of SHSID also did well and enjoyed the competition. However, it was the middle school students that gave the best performance, dominating the whole individual competition (all top threes were from our school) and also winning the team event. Throughout the competition, players representing many schools around the city were able to make friends and share ideas with one another. Even though some teams lost and some won, everyone enjoyed the day and was able to learn more about History. The Annual Asian Championships which will be hosted in Singapore this time will be attended by SHSID once again. The students of SHSID are excited to win their third title and also be part of this massive event that brings the elites in History from across the continent together.
