Puxi Grade 1: Learing about American Money

American Money is a difficult topic for all of the first graders living in China. Not all of the students are familiar with American money, especially the coins. The learning about the different coins is also difficult for them. The math teachers in first grade worked together very efficiently and searched for many educational resources online. Based on the great online educational resources about money, the teachers have come up with many interesting and efficient classroom activities to help the students with money learning.

To make the students more familiar with American coins, the teachers color-printed the pictures of each kind of coins and hung them on the wall. They also downloaded a very funny rap song about coins and played the song repeatedly during lunch, recess, or break time so that the students could learn the song to help them remember the coins.

The teachers gave an interesting home assignment about money for the students which was called “One Dollar Lollipop”. The students needed to cut off the paper coins given and paste the coins with the total amount of one dollar inside the “lollipop”. The students decorated the “lollipop” too. The aim of this assignment was to help the students build up the concept of “one dollar”. One of the most exciting class activities about money was called “I Have…Who Has…” Every student was given a card with two parts: certain coins and a sentence. All the students in the classroom took turns to stand up to first announce the total amount of the coins on the card, then read the next sentence with the other amount of the coins. The whole game required each student to be very focused and count the coins fast. To help the students practice counting change, the teachers designed some “shopping games” as well to encourage the students counting the their items and figuring out the total cost more quickly and correctly.

Although coins and currency are difficult for most first graders to grasp, their math teachers have thought of many different efficient and funny ways to help the students grasp American money. Now every first grader can count American coins and the change skillfully.
