Primary School Chinese Cultural Week: Poetry Competition

During Chinese cultural week, Primary Division on SHSID’s Pudong Campus held its first poetry competition for Grades 3 through 5. On April 28th , the twelve students who won their class-round poetry competitions joined a team of three students to compete in the auditorium. All of the students were so excited when the host, Ms. Gu, announced the beginning of the competition. The four teams consisting of one third, one fourth, and one fifth grade student closely competed against each other. The students in the audience were also allowed to answer poetry questions if the competitors answered incorrectly. After six rounds, the most exciting part of the competition began. A word from the poems was given (eg: “spring”), and the competitors took turns reading aloud the poems with the keyword until no more new lines could be recalled.

Finally, Eric C’s team from 3(1), Norah’s team from 4(1), and Sophia Y’s team from 5(2) won the championship. The supervisor, Ms. Liu, awarded all of the competitors their certificates and prizes. Poetry competitions are not just about winning– they are also about inspiring enthusiasm for poetry. We look forward to hosting the competition again next year.
