Grade 6: Connect Five Competition

Recently our school held the first bracket of the Connect Five competition. Many people attended this competition because it is both a fun and competitive strategy game that doesn’t take much time, while also being easy to setup.

When I came into the competition room at twelve thirty, I saw that a few people had already started playing against each other. I walked over to Joshua and Shunko’s table.

Joshua and Shunko were having a very intense battle. Joshua played black. I could see he was on the offensive and Shunko was mainly defending. The atmosphere was quiet and tense with spectators sighing at bad moves and cheering at better ones. As the game continued, I saw white was one chess piece away from connecting four chess pieces and Joshua wouldn’t be able to block him entirely from connecting five pieces after that move. I was very nervous because Joshua didn’t seem to notice the problem. He kept on placing his pieces on the opposite side of it. Suddenly, Shunko realized the part that could easily win him the game and put a piece in the key place. However Joshua calmly ignored it and placed a piece on the opposite side. My attention was on white’s side when Joshua suddenly said “I win.” I was surprised and pleased as I see that Joshua had connected five of his black pieces together. “No! Not bad Joshua!” They shake hands and the loser walked away, probably not going to make that mistake again, while the winner smiled and pumped his fist in the air.
