Puxi Grade 3: Reciting Poem in Dialect

Last week was the Chinese Culture Week at SHSID’s Primary Section. During Chinese class on March 30th, the third graders took turns to recite poems in local Chinese dialects.

Each student needed to choose one poem to learn and recite in a dialect. They could learn the dialect from their parents or grandparents. Their dialects ranged from Shanghainese, Cantonese, Northeastern Mandarin, the Southern Fujian Dialect, the Yunnan dialect, the Nanjing dialect and the Quzhou dialect. This activity not only gave kids an opportunity to hear different kinds of dialects, but also provided them a chance to review poems they learned before.

Language and dialects serve as an important tool for verbal communication and upholding ethnic cultures. We hope that students’ awareness of inheriting and preserving dialects can be greatly enhanced, thus a great variety of dialects can remain alive in the far future.
