Physics department: 7th Shanghai Particle Physics Masterclass

On March 17th, a group of passionate junior and senior students went to the 7th Shanghai Particle Physics Masterclass in Concordia. There, they were exposed to the intricacies of particle physics. Activities such as puzzle analysis and card sorting brought the students closer to the world of quarks. After lunch, the group received 100 data sets from the Large Hadron Collider to analyze over the week. To further their understanding about this particular field, the Masterclass went to the Shanghai Synchrotron to examine particle accelerators themselves.

A week later, the students returned with a greater understanding of particle physics, having analyzed huge amounts of data. The Masterclass then linked up Manila, Tokyo, Quincy, and professional physicists from CERN and Fermi lab to discuss their data. Many students participated in this discussion, asking questions to these professionals and communicating with their overseas peers. Overall, the Masterclass augmented the students' understanding of a new world: the microscopic world of quarks.
