Puxi Grade 3: Making Facial Makeup

Week 7 is the week of Chinese Culture in SHSID’s Primary Section. On March 29th, Puxi campus’ third graders experienced a special activity, learning about Chinese mask-painting.

Painted masks are one part of China’s ancient culture. During morning Read Aloud time, the third graders learned the basics of how Chinese mask painting works, including the different meanings of the different colors of paint.

Then in Personal Growth class, the third graders started to create their own mask designs. Some students chose black as the dominant color on their mask, to represent their upright character. Some students chose red, to represent their honesty. Some students chose to draw some special symbols and designs on their masks to show their unique characteristics.

Mask painting is very important in Chinese culture and heritage. The point of having our students learn to how to paint their owns masks was to give them a chance to experience real traditional Chinese culture and handcraft.
