Middle School: A Lecture on Adolescence Psychology

On a sunny Thursday afternoon on March 16th, students in seventh and eighth grade filed into the spacious auditorium to attend a lecture by Professor Zhou Wenxiu, psychological counselor from East China University of Science and Technology, and founder of the Here to Help Organization. Unlike most teachers, this professor has worked in therapy and therefore understands complex relationships between different types of people. She shared some of her knowledge with SHSID that day.

As an activity, Professor Zhou asked different students to come onto the stage to act out a scripted scene. In one scene, a boy would play the father, and a girl would play as his daughter. In another, a boy with red shoes would get mocked by his friends, classmates, and family. This unique way of teaching was met with laughter and applause.

In her lecture, this professor explained the intriguing meanings of various feelings and actions along with the sources of different emotions. As a way to interact with the crowd, she passed microphones around to room to ask how the students would react in different situations. For example, she questioned how everyone would react if somebody told them their outfit was ugly. One girl said that she would not mind. Another boy said he would reply with “yours is too.” After the many responses, Professor Zhou called for a vote to see what everybody else would have done.

Overall, her speech was very interesting and unique. Instead of talking by herself for an hour, she found ways to interact with her audience and get students involved. When her lecture concluded, the students left the auditorium with a better and newer understanding of how to react during various situations, and not only their own but their parents and classmates’ emotions too.
