Grade 11: PI Day
Grade 11: PI Day
On March 15th, SHSID’s Senior High School held “Pi Day”. This year, the variety of activities had greatly increased. New activities such as dodge ball, karaoke, 24 points, pin throwing, pie in the face, and math movie added a lot of color to the Pi day and granted opportunities to appreciate the beauty of math.
The morning of Pi Day was filled with students looking for cards hidden all over the school by various ASB members. This “hunt” was primarily for the “3141” Pi quest. In teams of five, students were challenged to use the number cards and sign cards they found to calculate the number “3141”. Assembling this number gave the challengers a chance to spin a ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and win prizes, including snacks and extra points on the Midterm exam.
For two CAS periods, the students put themselves in the world of Pi through various fun activities. There were math-related activities and also some casual activities. Students could gather stamps and numbers as they completed the activities, which they could use to spin the roulette wheel. Many activities incorporated complicated mathematical concepts in the form of a game and attracted many students. For example, Buffon’s needle problem was demonstrated in the pen throwing activity.
This Pi day is a great way to introduce a seemingly complicated mathematical concept to students who are not interested in Math. Now that Pi Day is becoming a school tradition, most High School students wish that there will be even more attractive events, games and prizes next year.
