Grade 8: Roots & Shoots Service Learning Group

In this semester, Ziyang Gu and Grace Chen from class 8(6) started a new service learning Group called Roots & Shoots. This program used to be a club from High School, and so the leaders of the club decided to start a Middle School section. Ziyang contacted with the leaders and we worked together to establish the Middle School section. We later decided to make it both a club and a service learning program.

On March 7th, we had an orientation session in Room 403. During the orientation, Ziyang Gu, as the group leader, first introduced our service learning program. She talked about what we will do this semester and why. She also talked about our goal of earning money to buy 1000 trees and transplant them to Xinjiang to help with the problem of desertification. Then, she handed out a document that contains all the information about the program. Students read the document attentively and discussed their questions with Ziyang. Ziyang asked about their ideas regarding the service learning program and hopes to blend in other people’s ideas and work to achieve the groups’ goals. A lot of students from 7th and 8th grade came to the orientation and they were all eager to participate in our service learning program. At last, we hope that in the new semester, we can successfully carry out our activities and finish our goal!
