History Lecture

On March 9th we were honored to once more invite Ms. Betty Barr to pay a visit to the auditorium of the Xian Mian Building and to give a lecture about her time in the Lunghwa internment camp during World War II. Students from the Middle and High Schools attended the lecture. Ms. Betty Barr gave a brief explanation of how she spend her childhood in the camp, including studying in the ‘Lunghwa Academy’, and working on the camp farm over the Summer. She brought a series of old photos to help illustrate her stories. Next, the students asked a lot of questions. One student wanted to know how the Japanese guards would treat someone who tried to escape. Betty answered all the questions and also shared some “secrets” with the students, like the mooncakes secretly given to her father by a Chinese friend from out side the camp, and the story of a sip of milk. Students learned more about the school campus and its history through her wonderful lecture.
