Grade 9:New optional course: Curling

This semester, our school launched a new optional course: curling. Every Wednesday, we will take the school bus to our training base. Two teachers have become our coaches. Under their guidance, we are just like a baby which is about to stand up, trying to take our first steps.

Thanks to our the teachers’ introduction, we now have a new understanding of curling. Curling is a popular sport in Northern Europe, and countries with an extremely cold climate. Its invention has a close relationship with fishermen. Cold weather freezes lakes in winter, during which time fishermen could not fish. To kill the time, they skated stones across the ice and developed their game into a sport.

Now, the equipment and the rules of curling have become very complicated. In order to slide on the ice, the curling shoes players wear their left and right feet are very different. The bottom of the left boot is made of a piece of plastic material that can reduce friction on the ice, as with the function of a skateboard on land. The right foot of the shoe is made of rubber, so you can easily stand firm on the ice. In this way, if you want to slide it is easiest to use the right foot. However, it’s easier said than done! In order to move like a professional player, moving handsomely across the ice, you must first practice a great deal.

In addition to these basic skills, sliding when holding on to the stone is also important. The essence of curling is one’s sliding posture, sliding angle and sliding speed, all of which affect the final position of the ball. Although we are still in the initial stage of our training, we will work hard to practice and try to master these basic skills!
