SHSID Academic Decathlon Teams Reap Success

Over 125 teams across China gathered from February 9th to 12th, 2017 for the United States Academic Decathlon In-country Competition hosted in Guangzhou to put their academic abilities to the test. SHSID’s 3 decathlon teams all ranked top 10 nationally, team 112 ranking 2nd, team 110 ranking 4th, and team 111 ranking 9th. Furthermore, team 112 qualified for the U.S. National Finals which will be held at Madison, Wisconsin from April 20th to 22nd.

Academic Decathlon is one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the United States. With over 48 years of history, it challenges students to master 10 different subjects, ranging from economics and music to speech and interview, as a team. The exciting theme this year was WWII. SHSID decathletes had an opportunity to learn about neutrinos and nuclear fusion in Science and Abstract Expressionism in Art.

Quoting Les Martisko, CEO of USAD, “There are lots of wonderful academic competitions out there. You can go prove you’re the best writer, or the best physicist, or the best speller. Academic Decathlon is not any of that, though. It’s not about demonstrating how good a student you already are. It’s about daring to push your limits, to master college-level material and to practice skills, like public speaking, that might be wholly new to you. You should join the Academic Decathlon not because that goal will be easy to achieve, but because it will be hard. You and your teammates may study more than you ever have before, not knowing whether you will take home 10 medals each or none at all. I invite you to struggle. And I invite you to learn; not just to read, but to understand; not just to win, but to lead.”
