College Application Essay Workshop for Grade 11

On Wednesday, January 12th, juniors of SHSID returned to school on the first day after the final examination to participate in a college application workshop, an event specially dedicated to helping students gain a better understanding of the application process. The entire morning was divided into three sessions: personal essays, UC essays, and college supplement essays.

Speakers gave insightful and detailed analysis of their topics: the Personal Essay session provided examples that emphasized the importance of having a cohesive underlying theme and building a persona for the admission officers in those limited 650 words; the speakers from the UC essays broke down the 8 UC essay prompts individually, indicating the significance of presenting uniqueness and individual personality through 4 essays; the college supplementary essay sessions particularly explained the methods of approaching the extracurricular essay and the ‘why college’ essay, noting that specificity, concreteness and familiarity with the applied colleges are aspects that need to be achieved in order to write a good supplementary essay. Through compelling presentations and engaging activities, the three sessions all noted the importance of an essay to SHOW and not tell, which includes using evidence instead of making unverifiable assertions in one’s essay.

As juniors are applying for colleges this fall, this was an opportunity to be more prepared and confident for the upcoming season. Overall, participants all considered this event to be a valuable experience. Those who were initially unfamiliar with the college application process had a more constructive understanding of it after these three hours.
