Grades 5-6: The Non-native Speakers’ Chinese Culture Week

With the cold weather in December, the Chinese culture week also comes. According to the different Chinese language levels and textbook contents, the non-native Chinese teachers let students choose different projects in hopes of students gaining an appreciation for the charm of Chinese culture. Some classes chose to draw a round fan, some colored the image of Forbidden City, some painted the Peking Opera mask, and some chose to kick the shuttlecock.

There is an article about Beijing Opera in advanced textbooks, which we failed to learn in the classroom due to limited class time. Painting the Peking Opera mask helps students have a deeper understanding of the Peking Opera. At the beginning, the teachers very worried about students' acceptance of the Peking Opera, and they worried whether students would be distance based on their lack of understanding. But in the process of introduction, the teachers used cartoon pictures, classic opera songs, and stories to gain student’s interest. The students were very interested in these things, especially when they saw the familiar figures such as Sun Wukong, Caocao, Baogong, and so on. Meanwhile, they were also attracted by all sorts of colors and designs.

After that, the students created their own mask with traditional designs. They were very attentive and earnest. The students’ drawings of the round fans gave a big surprise. Their round fans were full of Chinese artistic-concepts, which were praised by the teachers. It must be said that the fine art is beyond the language boundary.

In this activity ,the teachers not only continued some traditional projects, but also added some new ones. Projects such as coloring the image of the Forbidden City, introducing the traditional game—kick the shuttlecock, and so on. These new projects attracted a lot of students. The teachers also need to keep learning and developing new activities like these.
