Grades 9-10 Peer Advisor: Introduction of Club Activities in High School

Club activity is a necessities for students in order to enjoy a marvelous school life. It not only can make our resumes for college applications more attractive, but can also bring more CAS hours. At the same time, it enriches students’ school lives beyond their classes. Before this new semester started, the seniors helped us with many lectures and information in high school. Now we will pass down the essence of peer advisor by going to the middle school and giving lectures to the juniors in order to assist them. During the lunch break on Dec. 28th, Yvonne Yu from 10(4) and Jessica Zhu from 9(7) gave a brief introduction about different clubs and activities in ninth and tenth grade to students in seventh and eighth grade. The lecture offers them a chance to familiarize club activities in high school in advance.

During the lecture, Yvonne listed many outstanding and well-known clubs in tenth grade. She was confident and humorous while using simple language to summarize different activities in every club clearly. Meanwhile, she made interactions with the audience to ensure the listeners could participate in the discussion naturally. When some popular clubs like math club and MUN club were mentioned, there were loud responses from the audience containing strong admiration and resonance. Those legendary club leaders in higher grades astonished many students from seventh and eighth grade, and they showed great interests in creating their own clubs in the future. This made the tone of the lecture more relaxed. Yvonne also summarized a characteristic shared by many clubs in tenth grade- the relationship with charity. “Halo, AVA, Baking club, Interact Club and a lot more are all related to charity,” she explained, “charity activities are very beneficial for you in college applications, and it’s also a chance to reflect students’ benevolence. Interacting with people in needs help students integrate into society better and make it more enjoyable.”

Then, Jessica Zhu introduced some unique clubs in ninth grade, for example, criminal psychology club, rap club, etc. Every club has its own specialty, and students enjoyed listening very much. We found increasing interest in club activities among the juniors during this PA lecture. As a result, we will introduce the pluralistic club activities in high schools and elective courses as later topics.
