Grade 9: Alumnus Homecoming Speech -- Time Management

On Dec. 27th, 2016, SHSID invited the honorable alumnus Michael Li, a current mathematics student of Cambridge University, to give grade 9 students a speech on time management.

Michael Li graduated from SHSID in 2014. As a high school student, he received full marks in all 7 IB exams and in 15 AP exams as well. Meanwhile, he was also an effervescent member in mathematic activities such as AMC, COMC, HiMCM, etc. How could he achieved such perfect balance of extracurriculum life and busy schoolwork was the major subject of Michael’s speech. He started from flu-like phenomenon among high school students – procrastination. He pointed out that although it was hard to overcome the tough psychological condition, one must realize that the future is more valuable than the current life. It is always more important to consider about and plan for the future. Then, he proposed several suggestions and tips for grade 9 students, such as set up long term goal and daily to-do list, create “free days” and reflect one’s life routine, download a life calendar to help one to make detailed plan. Therefore, he aimed to help the younger students to improve study efficiency.

Being full of gentle humor and genuine anticipation, the speech received burst of laugh and fervent applause from the audience. Many asked Michael more questions after the speech to learn more about his skills of self control. The speech was a good lesson for all the grade 9 students, who may start to develop better habit to manage their life as well.
