SHSID Academic Hexathlon Championship 2016
SHSID Academic Hexathlon Championship 2016
The Academic Hexathlon is an on-campus competition. As its name suggests, it tests students on six different subjects: speech, writing, economics, mathematics, science, and the super quiz. The speech and writing competitions are open to all students in their corresponding grade levels, while the paper exams (economics, mathematics, and science) are only open to Hexathlon participants. The competitions mentioned above are to be taken by students individually, but their scores would be incorporated into their team scores. The super quiz, on the other hand, is a team event in which students gather together at lunchtime to answer a set of 90 questions as a team.
After all the events are completed, both individual and team awards were given out. At the same time, the speech and writing competitions (which are open to everyone) would also yield awards of their own.
In fact, I myself was a participant of the Academic Hexathlon. Throughout the course of the competition, I have had a unique and exciting experience that provided me with new insights on teamwork, as well as on my own abilities. First of all, I would like to thank my teammates: Sophie Li, Mei Ku, and Komatsu Yasuhiko. Without Sophie and Mei’s excellent performance in the speech and writing competitions, Hiko’s mind-blowing mathematical knowledge, as well as the diligence and determination of all of them in the super quiz event, I never would’ve made it into the prize bracket. On the other hand, I learned about my own deficiencies: I did not do well in the speech and writing competitions, which probably means that I should read and write more. Overall, the Academic Hexathlon gave me an entirely new perception of myself and my peers.
In general, the Academic Hexathlon is a multi-subject competition that seeks to promote teamwork and exploit the potential of students in a variety of subjects. Through participation in the Academic Hexathlon, students will make new friends, learn to appreciate teamwork, gain confidence, and improve their academic capabilities. It is a truly remarkable experience.
