Grade 9: Learning how to Make Chinese Handicrafts
Grade 9: Learning how to Make Chinese Handicrafts
On 2016 December 20th, the 9th grade Chinese non-native students had a class learning about the Chinese cultures. There were 2 activities prepared for us. The first activity was using colored dough to make different animals. At first, the teacher taught us how to make a bird with many different colors. Since, I do not have good skills in handcrafting, my bird was not a bird; it was more like a snake. Other people’s works were well-made with a good mix of colors. It actually looked like a bird with a bird-looking shape and bird-looking color, but some students really did a good job in manipulating the dough: They not only made beautiful birds, but also whatever they wanted to make, like a crab, a dragon, or even an alien. some of the products are hard to name, but really amazing.
The 2nd activity was using the bamboo leaves to make handcrafts like flower or grasshoppers. The process of making the crafts were hard and complicated. I was literally surprised by how fast the teacher’s hands were to make that complicated thing. Also, I was shocked at the fact that a single bamboo leaf could turn into a totally different thing. Overall, it was fun to have a break during these busy days having fun and at the same time also learning about Chinese culture that I didn’t know before.
